Opening Talk with Herzog & de Meuron

The new Schaudepot, built by the architects Herzog & de Meuron, is a permanent and publically accessible home for a large part of the Vitra Design Museum’s furniture collection. Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron talked about the new building as well as about collecting and exhibiting design together with Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman Emeritus of Vitra, and Mateo Kries, director of the Vitra Design Museum.

A Designer's Universe (12.03.2016 – 22.01.2017)

Alexander Girard (1907–1993) was one of the most influential textile artists and interior designers of the twentieth century. He created worlds of colourful opulence in which everything was precisely and artfully coordinated, from the smallest details to the big picture. Examples include the Irwin Miller House in Columbus, Indiana (1953; architect Eero Saarinen) and the legendary restaurant La Fonda del Sol (1960) in New York.

The designer duo Desiree Heiss und Ines Kaag have been collaborating on transdisciplinary projects under the Bless label since 1997. Their objects and products mix art and design, fashion and architecture, and business and social practice. For the project »Workout« they will transform the Vitra Design Museum Gallery into an experimental space that actively confronts visitors with their digital works environment.

The first Schaudepot temporary exhibition is dedicated to Radical Design, a design Movement that reached its peak at the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s in Italy and is one of the most important avant-garde movements in the history of design. With manifestos, unconventional design vocabulary, transdisciplinary working methods and utopian design ideas, exponents of Radical Design were protesting against functionalism and the established taste in design and architecture.

The products and installations created by the design studio Raw Edges are characterised by their playful use of colours and patterns. Raw Edges have made a name for themselves through their work for companies such as Kvadrat, Moroso and Louis Vuitton. They also set in scene »Alexander Girard« for the Vitra Design Museum. Shay Alkalay, one of the partners at Raw Edges alongside Yael Mer, spoke to chief curator Jochen Eisenbrand about the actuality of Girard's work.
