Ronan Bouroullec, Designer (France)

Drawknife

I first discovered this tool in my father’s workshop. I think I was twelve or thirteen
years old. I used to slide the blade along small piec es of wood that I fixed to a vise.
If I used the knife with delicacy, shavings appeared under the blade pressure;
this tedious work allowed me to sculpt and obtain gentle shapes. This was a major
discovery. I recall experiencing great pleasure at the possibility of sculpting precise
shapes. Until this moment, other tools had seemed too direct; the saw, the nails,
the hammer could not stimulate my interest. Too brutal, too banal. There is a deep
analogy between this blade that skims the wood and the pencil that slides on the
paper – a slow and meticulous construction of forms.
