Museum Network Conference MUSCON
To secure the quality of museum work in the long run, and even more important in time of economic crisis, we should focus on networking and cooperations. Acting on this conviction, Vitra Design Museum initiated already in 1996 the European Museum Network Conference called MUSCON. This annual conference offers an unique platform for museums with a focus on design, architectue and contemporary art.
Thanks to the generous support of our hosting partners, more than 100 institutions have joined together and remained in contact throughout the years. From among the participants (e.g. Victoria & Albert Museum, Centre Georges Pompidou, Stedelijk Museum), each year a different host steps forward to put on the event, taking the opportunity to present his institution as well as the local context.
This year the host of the European MUSCON 2009 has been the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark. The conference took place from Sep. 23rd - 26th.
In 2010 the conference will take place in London. Further information will follow soon.
In 2007, Design Miami and Vitra Design Museum launched the first American MUSCON during Art Basel Miami Beach and Design Miami fair week. Up to 30 directors and head curators (e.g. Museum of Modern Art New York, Wolfsonian FIU, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Walker Art Center) came together the last three years.
Also in 2010 we are happy to organize the conference at the beginning of the two fairs.
In order to push forward the exchange between European and Asian cultural institutions, we initiated in 2008 the first Asian MUSCON in Korea. The last Asian conference took place in October in Tokyo. Further information about Asian MUSCON 2010 will follow soon.
