Since 1996, the Vitra Design Museum has organized the international MUSCON conference in cooperation with annually changing local hosts. The aim of this conference is to promote the exchange of travelling exhibitions and other projects between European, American and Asian museums. MUSCON primarily focuses on institutions in the area of design and architecture, but is also open to museums in the fields of fine art, cultural history, science and other disciplines. In addition to a yearly conference for European museums, there is an annual American MUSCON (since 2007) as well as an Asian MUSCON (since 2008). The MUSCON network has brought together more than 200 institutions and contributed significantly to an intensified exchange of travelling exhibitions among leading international museums. The basic format of each MUSCON consists of 10 to 20 minute presentations by participants on current or upcoming travelling exhibitions. In addition, MUSCON conferences cover a selected in-depth theme along with keynote speeches and a panel discussion. Each MUSCON also includes an informal accompanying programme, which facilitates networking and inspiration among colleagues and professionals. To date, MUSCON hosting partners have included the Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, Design Museum London, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Powerhouse Museum Sydney and many others.
European MUSCON 2018The European MUSCON 2018 takes place in Hasselt and Genk in Belgium and is hosted by Z33 House for Contemporary Art and C-Mine. The date of the conference is 19 – 22 September 2018.
