The collection of the Vitra Design Museum ranks among the most important holdings of furniture design worldwide. It contains some 7000 pieces of furniture, a vast assemblage of lighting objects and numerous archives, as well as the Collection of the Eames Office, or the estates of Verner Panton and Alexander Girard. On 4 June 2016 the Vitra Schaudepot was opened, created by the architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, in which the Vitra Design Museum presents key pieces of its collection.

Since 1996, the Vitra Design Museum has organized the muscon conferences in cooperation with annually changing hosts. The aim of these conferences is to provide a professional platform for international networking and to especially promote the exchange of travelling exhibitions. muscon primarily focuses on institutions in the area of design and architecture, but is also open to museums in the fields of fine art, cultural history, science and other disciplines. In addition to an annual conference in Europe, there is also an annual muscon in the United States (since 2007) as well as occasionally in Asia-Pacific (since 2008). The muscon network has brought together more than 200 institutions and contributed significantly to productive exchange of travelling exhibitions among leading international museums. In a very collegial and cooperative atmosphere museum directors, head curators and exhibition planners may present their institutions and share their expertise, as well as strategize on new topics and establish new contacts. Each muscon also includes an informal accompanying program of regional trips to further facilitate networking among colleagues and provide local context. To date, partners who have hosted muscon include the Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, Design Museum London, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Powerhouse Museum Sydney, Design Miami/ and The Wolfsonian-FIU and many others.
muscon New York 2020The next muscon conference is hosted by The Museum of Arts and Design in New York on 8 May 2020, during the week of Frieze New York and TEFAF New York. muscon Milan 2020The next muscon in Europe will take place at La Triennale di Milano from 7 – 10 October 2020.
