The collection of the Vitra Design Museum ranks among the most important holdings of furniture design worldwide. It contains some 7000 pieces of furniture, a vast assemblage of lighting objects and numerous archives, as well as the Collection of the Eames Office, or the estates of Verner Panton and Alexander Girard. On 4 June 2016 the Vitra Schaudepot was opened, created by the architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, in which the Vitra Design Museum presents key pieces of its collection.

In conjunction with our alternating exhibitions, the Vitra Design Museum offers a variety of workshops for school-age children and youth, university students and other interested visitors. The programme ranges from children’s workshops to activities for school classes to enjoyable recreational workshops for groups. All of the workshops are oriented towards the respective target audience and based on sound didactic methods, providing insights into the design process as well as the associated requirements of imagination, rational thinking and manual dexterity. The aim is to increase the awareness of our everyday culture among participants and to inspire creative engagement with their own designed environment.
The Vitra Design Museum offers design workshops oriented to individual participants and families as well as groups and companies. In the course of the workshops, select themes are addressed and objects are created that participants can take home afterwards. Workshop attendees become acquainted with the design process from the idea and sketch up to the finished product. Other associated topics are the challenges of individual imagination, basic knowledge of statics and construction and the manual skills necessary to create a usable object. In addition to the general workshops, we offer special workshops in conjunction with the current exhibitions. As a group or company, you can book a workshop for a date of your choice and adapt the programme to your individual needs. The price includes admission to the current exhibitions at the Vitra Design Museum, the use of tools and materials under professional supervision as well as refreshments with snacks and beverages.

Our education programme for children and youth encompasses workshops on design and architecture conceived especially for our young guests. In the design workshops, a practical approach is taken to provide insights into the design process and the associated challenges of rational thinking, imagination and manual dexterity. In the architecture workshops, the buildings on the Vitra Campus offer an opportunity to introduce basic architectural terms and analyse various types of spaces. A very special programme is “Let’s talk about chairs”, which targets the teaching and practice of specific vocabulary terms with a French or German native speaker and thus provides a valuable supplement to in-school foreign language instruction.Information for school group booking: > Programmes Schools & Kindergartens (EN)> Programmes Schools & Kindergartens (FR)> Registration form (EN)> Registration form (FR)

Children tend to study things closely and make use of their natural creativity and inventiveness. We draw on these propensities and take a playful approach to exploring, comparing and assessing various shapes, materials and colours. Design and architecture themes are considered from a child-oriented perspective. The junior participants are given an opportunity to exercise their imagination, develop manual skills and learn the fundamentals of construction and statics. Each and every one of us must take it upon ourselves to improve and enhance our designed environment. The design and architecture workshops provide an ideal forum for conveying this self-assured sense of personal accountability.
