Bas Princen. Image and Architecture | OPENING

In his widely acclaimed photographs, Dutch artist Bas Princen portrays architecture and urban landscapes. His current works examine the unique features and details of architecture from across the centuries and the role that images have always played in it. His experiments with photography and architecture intermingle the characteristics of these media and blur the boundaries between them. Thus the large-scale close-ups in the exhibition represent architecture while themselves becoming architectural objects. The motifs vary from Renaissance tapestries and nineteenth-century steel constructions to buildings by Le Corbusier. Free admission

»Charles & Ray Eames. The Power of Design« (DE)

Charles and Ray Eames are regarded as two of the most important figures in twentieth-century design and have influenced generations of designers across the globe. No other name in design is so closely associated with technical perfection and a timeless aesthetic – but also with the playful start-up culture of the American West Coast, which was strongly impacted by the Eameses. The major retrospective »Charles & Ray Eames. The Power of Design« offers a comprehensive overview of the work of this legendary designer couple, ranging from furniture and interiors to exhibitions, films and photographs, while also portraying their everyday work in the Eames Office in Venice, California. The show features a unique selection of original objects, drawings, sculptures, film installations and many other works that are being presented together for the first time. Presented in collaboration with the Barbican Centre, London and The Eames Office.

Christian Holmsted Olesen – Scandinavian Design and Hans J. Wegner | OPENING TALK (EN)

The Danish designer Hans J. Wegner was a key figure in post-war Scandinavian furniture design, which is currently experiencing a renaissance. Christian Holmsted Olesen, author of the standard monograph on Wegner, »Just One Good Chair«, will speak about Hans J. Wegner’s work in the context of Danish design. In his quest to create the perfect chair, Wegner designed more than 500 different models, many of which are regarded as furniture classics today. Free admission

Hans J. Wegner. Designing Danish Modern | OPENING

A leading protagonist of Danish modernism, Hans J. Wegner made himself a name with furniture designs that harmoniously combine rationalist functionalism, a poetic aesthetic, and the Danish tradition of expert joinery. By reinterpreting historical furniture types, Wegner created numerous twentieth-century classics, many of which may be found in the holdings of the Vitra Design Museum. A monographic exhibition in the Schaudepot now shows pieces such as the Wishbone Chair (1950), the Peacock Chair (1948), and the Round Chair (1950) also known simply as »The Chair«. Further artefacts and a number of films offer insights into Wegner’s perfectionist attention to even the smallest details of furniture construction. Free admission

Designing the Night | Opening TALK (EN)

What explains the allure of legendary clubs like New York’s Studio 54 or the Palladium? What roles do design, music, architecture, fashion, and lighting play in this context? In conjunction with the opening of the exhibition »Night Fever«, these questions will be discussed by prominent guests: Ben Kelly, architect and designer of the Haçienda nightclub in Manchester (1982), graphic artist Peter Saville, who created album covers for bands such as Joy Division and OMD, and Konstantin Grcic, exhibition designer for »Night Fever«. The show’s curator, Jochen Eisenbrand, will host the conversation together with design historian and co-curator Catharine Rossi. Free admission, registration: events@design-museum.de

Night Fever. Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today | OPENING

Nightclubs and discothèques are hotbeds of contemporary culture. Since the twentieth century, they have been centres of the avant-garde that question the established codes of social life and experiment with different realities, merging interior and furniture design, graphics and art with sound, light, fashion and special effects to create a modern Gesamtkunstwerk. »Night Fever. Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today« is the first exhibition to give a comprehensive overview of the design history of the nightclub, examining its cultural context. Examples range from Italian clubs of the 1960s created by the protagonists of Radical Design to the legendary Studio 54 where Andy Warhol was a regular, from the Palladium in New York designed by Arata Isozaki to more recent concepts by the OMA architecture studio for the Ministry of Sound in London. Featuring films and vintage photographs, posters, flyers and fashion, the exhibition incorporates music, light and spatial installations to take visitors on a fascinating journey through a world of glamour and subcultures – always in search of the night that never ends. Bill Brewster – A Brief History of DJ Culture | TALK (EN)

What were the key developments that led to the growth of DJ culture? Who were its pioneers? And how did DJs come to make a profound impact on the entire music industry? British DJ and author Bill Brewster and co-author Frank Broughton explore this chapter of music history in their cult book »Last Night a DJ Saved My Life« (first edition 1999). In his talk, Brewster describes the key figures of DJ culture and the transformation of the DJ from a mere service provider to an acclaimed star. Free admission

Catharine Rossi – Radical Disco | TALK (EN)

First emerging in Italy during the 1960s, the Radical Design movement sought to change social conditions by means of experimental designs. The avant-garde met in and even created newly established nightclubs that gave expression to their design ideas: the Piper club in Rome and Space Electronic in Florence were just two examples of entirely new spatial concepts that aimed to explore new architecture and design practices. Catharine Rossi, design historian and co-curator of the exhibition »Night Fever«, speaks about pioneering Italian clubs that were far ahead of their time. Free admission

Social Design – The Weil Chair | SPECIAL WORKSHOP (DE)

Affordable design for all – this idea, which is as old as design itself, has lost none of its relevance. The »Hartz IV furniture« by Berlin-based architect Van Bo Le-Mentzel translates the concept into the digital age: with simple objects whose construction plans people can download from the internet and build as a DIY project. For his workshop at the Vitra Design Museum, Le-Mentzel created a brand-new design – the Weil Chair – which participants will be able to build and take home with them. Over the past years, the Dutch photographer Bas Princen has gained international acclaim for his suggestive artistic idiom and his collaborative work with OFFICE, the Belgian architectural firm headed by Kersten Geers and David van Seeveren. In the Gallery, Princen presents a new series of works that question the accepted conventions of architectural photography: What is architecture, what is a picture? Where do the boundaries between them lie? How do images of architecture shape our understanding of the built environment? Free admission

Exhibition tour »Night Fever. Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today« (DE)

Nightclubs and discothèques are hotbeds of contemporary culture. Since the 20th century, they have been centres of the avant-garde that question the established codes of social life and experiment with different realities, merging interior and furniture design, graphics and art with sound, light, fashion and special effects to create a modern Gesamtkunstwerk.
