The collection of the Vitra Design Museum ranks among the most important holdings of furniture design worldwide. It contains some 7000 pieces of furniture, a vast assemblage of lighting objects and numerous archives, as well as the Collection of the Eames Office, or the estates of Verner Panton and Alexander Girard. On 4 June 2016 the Vitra Schaudepot was opened, created by the architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, in which the Vitra Design Museum presents key pieces of its collection.

On the occasion of Basel’s Museum Night, we will transform the Vitra Campus into a dream world of light and shadow. Situated between the conscious and the subconscious, the world of dreams explored by the Surrealists emerges as a visual and physical experience as visitors enter the Fire Station’s interactive light installation. A mask-building workshop and guided tours of the exhibition give visitors the opportunity to learn more about Surrealism and design.
Time and again, designers have consciously turned away from established norms and created spectacular, experimental and funspirited pieces of seating furniture. In this tour, we will explore these special chairs and then make our own pop-up cards.
