The collection of the Vitra Design Museum ranks among the most important holdings of furniture design worldwide. It contains some 7000 pieces of furniture, a vast assemblage of lighting objects and numerous archives, as well as the estates of such designers as Charles & Ray Eames, Verner Panton and Alexander Girard. On 4 June 2016 the Vitra Schaudepot was opened, created by the architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, in which the Vitra Design Museum presents key pieces of its collection.

Charles and Ray Eames are regarded as two of the most important figures in twentieth-century design and have influenced generations of designers across the globe. No other name in design is so closely associated with technical perfection and a timeless aesthetic – but also with the playful start-up culture of the American West Coast, which was strongly impacted by the Eameses. The major retrospective »Charles & Ray Eames. The Power of Design« offers a comprehensive overview of the work of this legendary designer couple, ranging from furniture and interiors to exhibitions, films and photographs, while also portraying their everyday work in the Eames Office in Venice, California. The show features a unique selection of original objects, drawings, sculptures, film installations and many other works that are being presented together for the first time. Presented in collaboration with the Barbican Centre, London and The Eames Office.
