The Vitra Campus is a magnet for design and architecture enthusiasts. Few other places in the world can boast such a large number of contemporary architectural icons. It was here that Zaha Hadid created her very first structure in 1993 – the Fire Station – and American architect Frank Gehry constructed his first building in Europe in 1989. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the VitraHaus of 2010 on the north side of the campus is an eye-catcher, even from afar. Alongside the Vitra Schaudepot, also designed by Herzog & de Meuron, a second public area was created on the campus in 2016. Then, there are other works like the Conference Pavilion by Tadao Ando, a geodesic dome based on the designs of Richard Buckminster Fuller, a petrol station by Jean Prouvé, factory buildings by Nicholas Grimshaw, Álvaro Siza and SANAA and the Vitra Slide Tower by the artist Carsten Höller. Daily guided tours explain the backgrounds of architects and buildings alike.

Build Your Own Chair - Autoprogettazione by Enzo Mari (EN)

Details

In 1974, Italian designer Enzo Mari created his manual "Autoprogrettazione", a guide to a groundbreaking furniture collection that anyone could assemble themselves using simple materials such as wood, hammers, and nails. This work marked a milestone in design history by offering an alternative to mass-produced furniture and democratising good design. In our workshop, you will explore the world of designer Enzo Mari, who passed away in 2020, and gain insight into his life, philosophy, and innovative ideas.

With expert guidance, you will build your own Sedia Uno, one of Enzo Mari's most iconic designs. Step by step, you will assemble the individual parts and experience first-hand how a unique piece of furniture is created from simple materials. This workshop is not only a tribute to one of the great masters of design but also an opportunity to discover and develop your craftsmanship skills.

Whether you are a design enthusiast or simply looking to try something new, this workshop offers a chance to be creative and hands-on while learning about sustainable design.
