In many metropolises of the Arab world, growing urbanisation has resulted in a new cosmopolitan cultural landscape. Baghdad, Dubai, Cairo or Tunis are instances of this development. They provide room for critical debates, subcultures and avant-garde artistic movements. The exhibition critically examines the effects of this transiting process on the cities’ people, architecture and neighbourhoods, both in the region and its diaspora. This project is a cooperation between the Vitra Design Museum and the creators of the magazine Brownbook, who have been documenting contemporary urban culture in the Middle East and North Africa for the past ten years.Opening: 12.05.2017, 6 pm
MuseumThe scarcity and expense of housing is continually on the rise. In recent years, new forms of communal living and building have emerged all over the world in response to this challenge. The exhibition presents the most innovative examples, illustrates new living typologies and forms of participation, and introduces architects of the movement, including ON Design Partners, pool Architekten, Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter as well as ifau – institute for applied urbanism, Jesko Fezer and Heide & von Beckerath. »Together! The New Architecture of the Collective« also draws attention to precursors of the present trend, from utopian settlements of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, to social housing projects in the 1920s, to protest movements from the 1960s to the 1980s, when the inhabitants of many major cities sought alternatives to housing shortages and real estate speculation. The exhibition features a secret revolution in contemporary architecture, examining the social and economic ideals that serve as its foundation. This year he would have celebrated his 100th birthday: the Italian designer Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007) was one of the most influential yet unconventional personalities in 20th-century design. He gained renown with products such as the legendary »Valentine« typewriter (1969) for Olivetti, and as head of the creative collective Memphis, whose work revolutionized the realm of design in the 1980s. This exhibition highlights the multifaceted talents and activities of a great designer who did not view form and function as constraints, but rather as an opportunity to pose existential questions and explore the fundamental nature of human existence.Opening: 13.07.2017, 6 pm
