Here We Are!
Women in Design 1900 – Today
»Here We Are!« delivers a critical survey of the achievements and the working conditions of female designers over the past century. The exhibition will present objects created by leading female protagonists in different areas of design ranging from furniture, interiors, graphic design, lighting, textiles, and ceramics, to fashion and jewellery. It will include works by renowned designers such as Charlotte Perriand, Gae Aulenti, Lina Bo Bardi, or Eileen Gray, but also shed light on the contribution of lesser-known practitioners.
While many previous exhibitions about women in design have focused on individual figures or on the situation of women at institutions like the Bauhaus, »Here We Are!« looks at women in design through a wider lens, thus producing a panoramic view of the social context in which female designers have practiced over the past century. It highlights the contribution of female protagonists of modern and contemporary design, but also investigates questions such as the patriarchal structures in the writing of design history or the role and value of collaborative practice. The curatorial approach is reflected in an open, expandable exhibition architecture that is capable of accommodating local voices, or objects by collaborating partners over the course of the exhibition’s tour. The result is an accessible, multi-faceted exhibition that explores one of the critical issues of our time from a design perspective – an eye-opener for everyone interested in the world of design!
The exhibition is supported by Cartier and funded by the Cultural Foundation of the German Federal States.
