Over the past years, the Dutch photographer Bas Princen has gained international acclaim for his suggestive artistic idiom and his collaborative work with OFFICE, the Belgian architectural firm headed by Kersten Geers and David van Seeveren. In the Gallery, Princen presents a new series of works that question the accepted conventions of architectural photography: What is architecture, what is a picture? Where do the boundaries between them lie? How do images of architecture shape our understanding of the built environment? Free admission

Nightclubs and discothèques are hotbeds of contemporary culture. Since the 20th century, they have been centres of the avant-garde that question the established codes of social life and experiment with different realities, merging interior and furniture design, graphics and art with sound, light, fashion and special effects to create a modern Gesamtkunstwerk. »Night Fever. Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today« is the first exhibition to give a comprehensive overview of the design history of the nightclub, examining its cultural context. Examples range from Italian clubs of the 1960s created by the protagonists of Radical Design to the legendary Studio 54 where Andy Warhol was a regular, from the Palladium in New York designed by Arata Isozaki to more recent concepts by the OMA architecture studio for the Ministry of Sound in London. Featuring films and vintage photographs, posters, flyers and fashion, the exhibition incorporates music, light and spatial installations to take visitors on a fascinating journey through a world of glamour and subcultures – always in search of the night that never ends.

Since the 1980s, Ron Arad has been regarded as a leading figure in furniture design. Featuring radical materials and unusual shapes, the raw, experimental metal seating pieces of his early work revealed a new design aesthetic. Arad has since worked with major furniture companies such as Cassina, Kartell, and Moroso. Inspired forms and a surprising functionality have remained characteristic features of his work, which ranges from individual furnishings to several architectural projects. In conjunction with this solo exhibition in the Schaudepot, Mateo Kries, Director of the Vitra Design Museum, talks with Ron Arad about his work. Free admission

In their book »Nightswimming«, Giovanna Silva and Chiara Carpenter examine and portray the stories of nightclubs in various European metropolises. Affordable design for all – this idea, which is as old as design itself, has lost none of its relevance. The »Hartz IV furniture« by Berlin-based architect Van Bo Le-Mentzel translates the concept into the digital age: with simple objects whose construction plans people can download from the internet and build as a DIY project. For his workshop at the Vitra Design Museum, Le-Mentzel created a brand-new design – the Weil Chair – which participants will be able to build and take home with them. Registration: info(at)design-museum.de , € 115.00 per person
